Approximately 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Cars, walls and postal boxes were vandalized, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they reported in a statement.
Police state they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a man discovered that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored liquid.
The fluid had been applied in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Police then found many other vandalized vehicles and house walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials state preliminary tests indicate the fluid was likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no clue as to where it came from; officials are not yet informed of any injuries in connection with the occurrence," they added.
Municipal representatives announced they were attempting "to unravel the incident" and have requested to the community for tips.
A high-ranking official stated the attack rendered him without words and needed to be addressed rapidly.
"This incident affects the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist attack five years ago," he stated on online, referring to the murder of nine people by a gunman focusing on individuals of migrant background in 2020.
