Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like typical body horror, but within Together resides a intense contemplation about our choices in loving one another.

A Debut Feature Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for a decade. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The plot commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their country house, a storm hits, and the protagonists discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and presents them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and distant from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is amplified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together avoids making either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in most partnerships a decade in. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
